Prof. John M. Hobson

John M. Hobson, PhD, FBA, is Emeritus Professor of Politics and International Relations at the University of Sheffield and a Fellow of the British Academy. He received his PhD in Historical Sociology from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) in 1991. Prior to joining the University of Sheffield in 2004, he held academic appointments at La Trobe University and the University of Sydney. His research spans international relations, global historical sociology, international political economy, and the critique of Eurocentrism. He is internationally recognised for challenging conventional Western-centred narratives of world history and for highlighting the contributions of Asian and other non-Western civilizations to the development of the modern global order. His major publications include The Wealth of States (1997), The State and International Relations (2000), The Eastern Origins of Western Civilisation (2004), The Eurocentric Conception of World Politics (2012), and Multicultural Origins of the Global Economy (2020). His scholarship has made a significant contribution to debates on global history, postcolonial international relations, and international political thought.
