Safaruk Zaman Chowdhury

Dr. Safaruk Chowdhury is the Academic Director of the Centre for Islamic Knowledge and also serves as the Chairman of the Islamic Literary Society. He began his academic journey studying Philosophy at King’s College London, where he also earned the prestigious Associate of King’s College (AKC) award. Following this, he traveled to Cairo to pursue the traditional Islamic Studies curriculum at the renowned al-Azhar University. Upon returning to the UK, he completed his Master’s degree with distinction at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London.
Dr. Chowdhury’s doctoral research focused on the eminent Sufi hagiographer and theoretician Abu ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami (d. 412/1021). His dissertation was later published as A Sufi Apologist of Nishapur: The Life and Thought of Abu ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami (Sheffield: Equinox Publishing, 2019). He has authored numerous academic articles on Islamic philosophy and theology, with particular emphasis on ethics, metaphysics, logic, and epistemology.
His latest book, Islamic Theology and the Problem of Evil (New York and Cairo: AUC Press, 2021), is a groundbreaking work—the first in Islamic Studies to approach the problem of evil through the lens of analytic theology. Dr. Chowdhury also served as the lead researcher on the project Beyond Foundationalism: New Horizons in Muslim Analytic Theology, funded by the John Templeton Foundation in collaboration with Cambridge Muslim College and the Aziz Foundation, where he explored innovative perspectives in Islamic epistemology.
He has previously lectured at both SOAS and Birkbeck, University of London. In addition, he runs the Islamic Analytic Theology website, where his academic work is showcased, and his research is also accessible via his Academia.edu page.
